February: Asylum founder and superintendent Dr. J. Edward Turner resigns.
May 1: Dr. Albert Day replaces Turner as Director.

1870
March: Fire destroys East Wing. Dr. Day implicated. Operation suspended for renovation.
May: Dr. Albert Day resigns. Dr. Daniel G. Dodge replaces Day as Director.

1872
Asylum reaches highest population with 334 patients. Population begins gradual decline. By 1878 population is reduced to only 39 patients.

1879
January 7: Governor Lucious Robinson declares the inebriate asylum experiment to be a "complete failure" and recommends conversion to an asylum for the insane.
May: Binghamton Asylum for the Chronic Insane established.
June 20: Inebriate Asylum suspended. Dr. Carlos F. Macdonald installed as superintendent.
