The institution is renamed "The New York State Inebriate Asylum". It is to be the first of a generation of public hospitals in the United States committed exclusively to the medical treatment of alcoholism.
1858
J. Edward Turner canvasses New York State selling $10 subsciptions for capital stock in the New York State Inebriate Asylum.
June 17: Ground breaking.
The cornerstone is placed on September 24.
Construction continues for six years.
1864
February 22: First patients admitted.
September 17: Fire in North Wing, Dr. Turner implicated.
September 29: Regulations and Rules adopted by the Board of Trustees.
