NEW YORK STATE
INEBRIATE ASYLUM

REGULATIONS

  1. All patients who enter the New York State Inebriate Asylum must be committed by the Courts, or sign a written contract to remain in said Asylum for one year, to be goverened by the rules and regulations of said Asylum.
  2. All persons who place a patient in the New York State Inebriate Asylum, must pay the charges for medical treatment and board for six months in advance, and at the expiration of that time must also pay for the succeeding six monghts in advance.
  3. All persons who shall place a patient in the New York State Inebriate Asylum shall give bonds to said Asylum in the sum of one thousand dollars to secure all damages which may be committed by said patient upon the property of said Asylum, and for the expenses which may arise for arresting and replacing the escaped patient in the Asylum.
  4. In case a patient should die while in the custody of the Asylum, the institution will refund all moneys due deceased on medical treatment, to the committee or friend who may be authorized to receive the same.
  5. Persons who shall place a patitne tin the Asylum shall in no case furnish said patient with money or postage stamps.
  6. All letters, papers, pamphlets and packages sent to patients must be enclosed to the Superintendent of the Asylum.
  7. No one, except a parent, brother, sister, wife, husband, guardian or committee, shall visit any patient under the control of the institution, unless by a written consent from said relatives, guardian or committee.
  8. No person will be allowed to visit the Asylum without a pass signed by one of the Trustees, said pass to be delivered at the Asylum.
  9. Thursday will be the only day in the week for visiting the Asylum, unless the visitor be a parent, brother, sister, wife, husband, guardian or committee of a patient.
It shall be the duty of the Superintendent to have the patients' room inspected daily. The Superintendent will regulate the time for baths, exercise and work for the patients.
No. 1. No Patient will be allowed to use sprituous or fermented liquors, tobacco or other narcotics.
No. 2. No patient will be allowed to hold any conversation with the workmen employed by the Asylum.
No. 3. All letters, papers, pamphlets and packages for patients shall be opened in the presence of one of the physicians of the Asylum, and all letters and papers shall be sent through the office and stamped by said Asylum.
No. 4. All trunks, valises and boxes must be examined by one of the Physicians of the Asylum, when the patient is admitted, and then placed in the trunk-room of the institution.
No. 5. Patients must receive their friends only in the reception rooms of the institution.
No. 6. No patient will be allowed to walk nearer than three hundred feet to the public roads, or pass off the grounds of the Asylum.*
No. 7. Patients will not be allowed to absent themselves from the Asylum while walking, for more than one hour.
No. 8. No patients will be allowed to kindle fires on the grounds of the Asylum.
No. 9. No patient will be allowed to have in his or her possession money or postage stamps while under treatment at the Asylum.
No. 10. No patient shall carry or have in his possession fire arms or other weapons.
No. 11. No patient will be allowed to visit the butler's room, the laundry or kitchens of the Asylum.
No. 12. No patient must visit the rooms of other patients without an invitation.
No. 13. No patient will be allowed to purchase articles for other patients without the consent of the Superintendent.
No. 14. No patient will be permitted to visit the town unless accompanied by the Superintendent of the Asylum.
No. 15. No patient must black or brush boots in his room. All boots that need blacking must be placed outside the room door at ten o'clock P.M.
No. 16. Profane swearing is prohibited.
No. 17. All patients will be required to attend Divine Service on the Sabbath, and morning and evening prayers. Amusements are prohibited on the Sabbath.
No. 18. All lights in patients' rooms must be extinguished at ten o'clock P.M., and patients must retire to rest at the ringing of the bell at one-quarter before ten.
No. 19. Patients must arise at the ringing of the first bell in the morning.
No. 20. No patient will be allowed to attend places of amusement or public meetings in town.
No. 21. No patient will be allowed to make any present to any servant or employee of the institution, while he or she is under the control of said institution.
No. 22. Patients must not mar or injure the wood work or furniture of the Asylum.
No. 23. All patients must be in the ward of the Asylum at the ringing of the evening bell.
Any patient violating the above rules will be restricted in the privileges at the Asylum.
