Description
From "Fourth Annual Report of the New York State Inebriate Asylum", 1866.
It is the purpose of the trustees to finish the transept, Sourth wing and East buildings the coming year. To build gas works, to lay out the ground, finish main avenue and plant four rows of trees the entire length of the same. These improvements will require a large expenditure of money which must necessarily come from the benevolent of our State. Such improvements would add much to the comfort pleasure and well-being of the patients.

The asylum farm contains about four hundred acres of land embracing a great diversity of soil and suited to a great variety of crops. This department will give a revenue to the institution and afford employment to the patients who will take an interest in agriculture. The large garden will also afford exercise and amusement to those patients who are interested in horticulture. During the past year we have expended considerable money in under-draining and fertilizing the farm which will add greatly to its value and productiveness. We wish to increase our dairy to sixty cows so as to afford the patients an abundant supply of milk and cream. As soon as the funds of the asylum will permit we propose to have as many horses for the daily exercise of the patients as their health may demand. No one can estimate too highly the advantages of horse-back riding to this peculiar class of invalids. When the grounds are entirely laid out and the roads completed there will be about three miles in circuit for riding and driving on land belonging to the institution.
