| In 1960 the New York State Department of Public Works launched a “grave-moving operation” to make way for Federal Interstate Route 505, otherwise known as the Penn-Can Highway and later renamed Interstate 81. Slightly more than 1,500 graves were moved from the original Binghamton State Hospital cemetery to an area nearby on the hospital grounds – now known as the upper cemetery. The work was contracted at roughly $100 per grave and performed under supervision of a local funeral director. Relocated graves are marked with small granite stones engraved only with sequential burial numbers. The stones are designed to mount flush to the ground but most have since settled below ground, giving the appearance of a large empty field. |
